Skype released client for Symbian 5th Edition

If you remember, when the Nokia N97 was announced, it was told that Skype, the very popular VoIP Service, should be integrated. There was a huge discussion if Service Providers stopped it or not, whatever, that doesn´t really matter. What does matter is, that a Skype Symbian Client was released a few weeks ago – for 3rd Edition. Now, finally, Skype released a client for 5th Edition, finally, N97 users should be able to use Skype with a native client. But guess what, it doesn´t work on N97. At least not with the 21.x firmware. I thought it was the fault of my N97 but after asking on Twitter people told me that they get the same error. The app downloads and installs fine, then, when you fire it up, there are two screens you have to accept (Network connection and stuff) and after that, when the app should start, it just crashes. Ricky from SymbianGuru told me that there is a known issue with 21.x firmware when showing contacts, i can´t confirm that, because i don´t even get to this point.

I really hope, that Skype fixes that. I like clients that are doing ONE job, but do it good. I don´t need Nimbuzz or Fring, which have several services included, if i only want to use Skype. From what you can read around the web, the client does its job quite well, you can use your Skype credits and stuff, so quite a client i would like to use on the N97 which it was promised for…

Shortly after making the whole code of the most popular smartphone OS opensource, @Symbian started a twitter campaign to give away even more. Yesterday they started with giving away 2GB Flash Drives with the whole source code of Symbian on it, but what will it be today? Just give them a shout with hashtag #symbiangives to find out. I think most people can´t imagine what a huuuuge thing it is to make a whole OS open source. People can do with it what they want, port it to devices they want, change it the way they want. I just hope that the mobile device manufacturers take the chance to make the best mobile OS ever and don´t try to cripple it down to nothing.

Sn0wbreeze let´s you jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3

Shortly after the release of the iPhone OS 3.1.3, we are now already able to jailbreak and unlock, by creating a custom IPSW. Unfortunately, the new models of iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch (also known as MC models) are not supported, but people with an iPhone 3G or an old iPhone 3GS can enjoy full freedom again. It is important that you didn´t upgrade to 3.1.3 yet, because if you did, you also did upgrade the baseband version, which is not unlockable by now.

To create your custom IPSW, download it through iTunes and run Sn0wbreeze. You have two options, simple mode and expert mode. Simple mode will do all the neccessary steps, hacktivation and pushfix included. Expert mode gives a few more options, like the selection of blacksn0w to unlock your iPhone. But you can always install blacksn0w through cydia, if you need the unlock. So i recommend simple mode, especially if you have an older 3GS, because some people reported problems when using expert mode together with an iPhone 3GS.

After having built your custom IPSW, just restore it through iTunes and you are done. Enjoy your jailbroken iPhone! Sn0wbreeze only works on Windows machines, Xp, Vista and Windows 7 are supported (32 and 64 bit).

A new version of sn0wbreeze has been released which should fix some issues the old version had in some cases.

Ovi Maps Racing Track Editor

As much as i hated my Nokia N97 until now, Ovi Maps Racing makes it worth to be used a few times a day. I just like the game, which is available for free from Ovi Store. Of course, the graphics aren´t what they should be in 2010 but then again, it is Symbian. The game is a lot of fun and the best feature is the track editor. It is pretty easy to design your very own racing tracks and drive around in your home city on your Nokia device. How easy it is, you will see in the video below. It is just a few clicks until you can drive wherever you want. If you don´t want to use the feature to be located, you still can create your own track by chosing a given city. Excellent game with excellent features. Together with free Ovi Maps Navigation the best thing Nokia gave us since the release of the N95.

After a lot of planning and fighting with the how-to, it is finally here. MobilPresse.com in english language. As i used the .com domain for the german site before, i decided to let the german articles stay where they are because of the other sites linking to them. If you see something you don´t understand, i´m quite sure it is because you don´t know the language. Those articles will vanish as more english content is generated, so it isn´t that much of a deal.

What you will find here? Well, info, thoughts and reviews about mobiles, gadgets, software, console (handheld) gaming. Pretty much anything that interests ME. Aufmerksame Leser werden es in letzter Zeit schon mitbekommen haben, MobilPresse.com wird zweisprachig. Deshalb empfehle ich allen deutschen Lesern, sich MobilPresse.de zu bookmarken. Feedsubscriber sollten ebenfalls ihren Feedlink ändern. Das hier ist der neue, mit den deutschen Inhalten, oder Ihr nutzt einfach denn RSS Button auf der .de Seite. Im Moment laufen beide Seiten noch parallel (.de bereits auf dem neuen Server, .com noch auf dem alten). Wenn die .com Adresse dann umgezogen ist, wird es auf MobilPresse.com nur noch englische Inhalte geben. Bis dahin wird .com nicht mehr aktualisiert. Der erste .de Artikel wurde heute veröffentlicht, also hüpft schnell rüber.

iPad? Brauch ich nicht! Oder doch?

27. Januar 2010, 19 Uhr: Mit der Apple Keynote beginnt das Event, auf das nicht nur Apple Fans gewartet haben. Apple will eine neue Produktgruppe einführen, eine Brückentier zwischen Smartphone und PC. Steve Jobs beeindruckendster Satz war wohl: “If there’s gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks — otherwise it has no reason for being.” Und dann packte er es aus, das iPad. Und plötzlich kam mir mein iPhone so klein vor. Das iPad sieht aus wie ein Riesen-iPod-Touch, klar irgendwo muss der 25cm Screen ja untergebracht werden. Den Tech Freaks wurde bei der Präsentation sehr schnell klar, es ist nicht das Wundergerät, das sich viele gewünscht haben. Kein Multitasking, keine Flashunterstützung im Browser, keine Kamera. Doch was kann das Ding dann, dass es eine Existenzberechtigung hätte? Es ist eine Multimedia Maschine. Es spielt Filme in brillianter Qualität ab, das Email Programm sieht mehr als nur gut aus, es gibt eine Version von iWork dafür. Dadurch dass es auf dem iPhone OS basiert, stehen zum Marktstart bereits 140.000 Programme und Spiele zum Download bereit. Es gibt eine eBook Reader Funktion mit angeschlossenem Store (iBooks). Es ist dünn und es ist leicht.

Kann das iPad einen PC ersetzen? Nein. Soll es das? Nein. Das iPad ist nicht darauf ausgelegt, ein vollwertiger PC zu sein. Das was mit Netbooks versucht wurde, nämlich PCs in Handtaschenformat zu bringen, wurde hier bewusst nicht angestrebt. Das iPad ist ein Entertainment Device. Und wenn man es als solches betrachtet und versteht, versteht man auch, warum es erfolgreich sein wird. Im Gegensatz zu Netbooks wird das OS hier nicht durch schwache Hardware ausgebremst, sondern durch verbesserte Hardware beschleunigt. Kein ruckeln, keine Verzögerungen, it just works. Durch iBooks wird es gerade dem Amazon Kindle eine große Konkurrenz bieten. Apple wird mit eBooks das machen, was es auch mit MP3 gemacht hat. Den Markt gewaltig aufmischen.

Und wie auch beim iPhone wird es beim iPad so sein, dass die Apps das große Zugpferd sein werden. Die Demos von Gameloft und EA versprechen viel Gutes, und dabei hatten die Programmierer gerade einmal 2 Wochen Zeit, die Apps iPad gerecht umzuschreiben. Das alles für sich betrachtet ist durchaus beeindruckend. Ist es vielleicht doch das Wundergerät, das sich alle gewünscht haben? Nein. Es ist ein Gerät für den Massenmarkt. Und der massenmarkt wünscht sich keine technisch ausgereizten Produkte. Der Massenmarkt setzt auf einfache Handhabung. Und das hat Apple mal wieder hinbekommen. Leute mit einem iPhone oder iPod Touch (und das sind 75 Mio weltweit) können das Gerät out of the Box bedienen, wissen etwas damit anzufangen. Einsteigern wird es hingegen sehr einfach gemacht. Die intuitive Bedienung des OS ist selbst für Kinder geeignet.

Am meisten überraschte Apple letztendlich aber mit dem Preis. Was wurde nicht alles spekuliert im Vorfeld. Preise zwischen $800 und $1000 galten als relativ sicher. Doch weit gefehlt. Apple verkauft das iPad (ohne Vertrag oder sonstiges) für $499. Das ist Netbook Niveau. Für ein Apple Produkt eigentlich viel zu niedrig. Aber auch das zeigt, wie aggressiv Apple die neue Produktreihe in den Markt drängt. Kauf ich mir nun ein Netbook oder ein iPad, um mal gelegentlich zu surfen und eine Mail zu schreiben? Hmm, nehm ich doch das iPad, dann kann ich auch noch Filme schauen, eBooks lesen, Spiele spielen… eBooks sind die Zukunft, hol ich mir ein Amazon Kindle dafür? Hmm, warum kein iPad, da hab ich gleich noch eine Surfmaschine, ein Fotoalbum, eine Spielekonsole…und das für $10 mehr…

Das iPad hat ein unglaublich großes Potential, es wird die Softwarebranche noch mehr pushen, eBooks werden dadurch noch viel mehr an Popularität gewinnen und Mobile Entertainment wird einen neuen Stellenwert einnehmen. Und die Tech Freaks? Die dürfen weiter von einem Wundergerät träumen…

Es hat also doch nicht bis zum nächsten großen Firmwareupdate gedauert, ab sofort ist Ovi Maps mit der kostenlosen Navigation (Fahren & Gehen) auch für das Nokia N97 verfügbar. Zu finden als OTA Download im Menü Aktualisierungen. Bei der Suche nach Aktualisierungen über das *#0000# Menü wird dieses Update nicht angezeigt. Viel Spaß mit Ovi Maps und der kostenlosen Navigation.

Install0us – eine Ära geht zu Ende

Hand aufs Herz, wer kenn das Projekt Install0us nicht? Der AppStore, der nichts kostet, Apps, die innerhalb von Minuten nach erscheinen gecracked verfügbar sind? In der iPhone / iPod Touch Gemeinde dürfte es wohl nichts geben, das bekannter wäre, wenn es darum geht, kostenlos an Apps zu kommen. Dass dies auf Dauer nicht gut gehen kann (zum Glück), war irgendwie jedem klar, doch nun ist es soweit, das Projekt wird eingestellt. Der Gründer erklärt hier warum das Ganze. Es sind, wie man leicht vermuten kann, Legalitätsgründe. Was man dem Projekt jedoch anrechnen kann, ist, dass Spenden die für v3 getätigt wurden, zurückerstattet werden. Das ist man normalerweise von illegalen Angeboten nicht gewohnt. Das zeigt auch ein wenig, dass sich puy0 relativ sicher war, sich auf legalem Boden zu bewegen, bzw. dass er nicht versucht hat, mit illegalen Downloads “reich” zu werden.

Es wird sich zeigen, ob die Schließung von Install0us Auswirkungen auf die Nutzung gecrackter Apps haben wird, ich persönlich denke schon. Vielleicht sehen die Entwickler aber dann auch mal, dass eben nicht jede gecrackte App, die heruntergeladen wurde, dann auch gekauft wird, nur weil sie nicht gecrackt verfügbar ist. Der in der letzten Woche oftmals erwähnte Schaden von $ 450 Mio durch die Verbreitung und Nutzung von gecrackten Apps auf dem iPhone ist sicher nicht sehr realistisch. Ich denke, selbst wenn es 10% davon sind, ist es schon viel. Viele laden gecrackte Apps nur, weil sie eben verfügbar sind, würden sie aber niemals laden, wenn sie nur legal verfügbar wären. Somit relativiert sich der Schaden. Auch wird interessant zu beobachten sein, wie sich andere Projekte wie AppCake oder AppTrackr (bewusst keine Links gesetzt ) nun entwickeln.

Ich kann nur wiederholen, was ich schon öfter geschrieben habe: Es war nie zuvor so günstig, an mobile Software zu kommen, wie mit Einführung des AppStores. Wenn Euch eine App gefällt, kauft sie. Entwickler stecken da jede Menge Arbeit und Kohle rein. Ihr geht doch auch nur für Geld arbeiten, oder?

Ovi Maps Navigation kostenlos, aber nicht für alle

Am 21.Januar hat Nokia weltweit zu einem großen Ovi Event eingeladen. Die Spekulationen gingen dahin, dass der Ovi Store 2.0 vorgestellt wird oder irgendetwas anderes großartiges “Ovi-mäßiges” angekündigt wird. Dem war leider nicht so, doch was Nokia auspackte, ist nicht gerade klein. Die sprachgesteuerte Navigation von Ovi Maps (früher Nokia Maps) ist ab sofort kostenlos. Aber wie so oft hat die Sache einen Haken. Nokiatypisch werden nicht alle Handys davon profitieren, sondern nur einige Auserwählte. Es war die Rede von Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic und Nokia X6. Und schon ging der Aufschrei wieder los. Die arg gebeutelten N97 Nutzer werden außen vorgelassen? Vorerst. Ja. Aber mit dem Firmwareupdate (2.1) am 28. Januar, soll sich dann auch gleich die neue Ovi Maps Version mitinstallieren und kann ab dann natürlich auch kostenlos genutzt werden. Berichten zu Folge geht Nokia diesen Schritt, da die Installation über den Installler 20MB internen Speicher benötigt (9mb nach der Installation), und das Nokia N97 ja bekanntlich arge Probleme mit dem internen Speicher hat. Andere schreiben wiederum, dass die Installation auch jetzt schon möglich ist (wahrscheinlich die Glückskinder, die mehr als 20MB freien internen Speicher haben). Wer also nicht bis 28. Januar warten will, kann sein Glück ja mal probieren. Ovi Maps kann bei Nokia heruntergeladen werden.

Ich finde die Aktion sehr gut, Ovi Maps ist ein absolut geniales Navigationsprogramm und da die Karten über den PC heruntergeladen werden können, ist eine weltweite Navigation ohne Roaminggebühren möglich. Nokia geht damit einen großen Schritt in Richtung gegen Google, die auf ihrem Android System bereits seit einiger Zeit kostenlose Navigation anbieten.
