What’s Spirit?
• Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
• Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
• If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

Requirements

• Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
• An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
• Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
• Syncing with iTunes before trying this highly recommended.

Note: On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia’s appearance is not final.)

• Troubleshooting: If you’re getting error code c0000005, apparently setting compatibility mode to Windows 98 or 95 allows Spirit to work.

You like your iPhone/iPod Touch? You like the AppStore and its huge amount of apps? Paid Apps? You think it costs too much to try them all? No Problem, there is an app for that. Well, not really an app, more a method to download everything for free. Directly to your iDevice, without any legal issues. A Californian Hacker Group, known (or not known until now), called RIPLA found a way to bypass the iTunes Account login, when downloading from the AppStore. It works on ANY iDevice, it does not need to be jailbroken or be modified in any way.

You have 8 icons on the launcher screen by default: Home Timeline, Public Timeline, DMs, Mentions, Profile, Trends, Nearby and Search. If you follow lists on twitter, these are shown as icons too. If a screen is not enough for all icons, a second one is generated. You can get there by swiping, like you do in the iPhone menu. The best thing is, you can place your icons the way you want. If you want, for example, all your favorite lists on the main launcher screen, you do it the same way as if you just want one icon on the main screen. You can also easily unsubscribe lists by just deleting the icon.

The Settings screen. You have a lot of options to customize the behaviour of Tweets. First thing is the Font Size. On lowest level you can see 4-5 tweets on a page where you can only see 2 if you chose the biggest setting.

Next point is the Retweet Style. After the official introduction of Retweets, which was not the variant users have been using before, App Designer had to do something. So you can decide which way you want to retweet. Either the classical way (with comment, as your own tweet) or the official way like you do on the web version of Twitter. It is a general setting, so you can´t decide from case to case which style you want which is a bit sad.

The option Name Display is self describing, either lets you display the username or the name the user put in the Name field.

“Avatar Touch opens” has a lot of options of what should happen if you touch someones avatar. You chose if you want to see his Timeline, his Profile, his Followers, his Followings, his mentions (where he was mentioned), his Favorites or his lists. Again it is a prechosen option, selecting those by a long press on an avatar would have been better.

The function “Open to launcher“, if activated, always takes you to the launcher screen, no matter where you have left the app. If it is deactivated you start where you have left.

There is also a “Screen Rotation” setting. There are 3 options: “always”, “never” and “Compose and Web only”. Always does not really fit as the important launcher screen always is in portrait mode. That´s kind of unlogical and should be fixed, in my opinion.

Autoload Replies can be turned on and off. I don´t get the point of it but it is present there. Save Photos can be activated too, which means, if i tweet a photo it is automatically saved to the library.

The two Theme Options are just cool. First, there is a black Theme (which was taken out on my favorite client echofon) and second, you can use the themes based on time. If you want a light one through the day and a dark one in the night, you simply set which time is night and you get the right theme based on that.

The next settings are for external services, you can set your account details for Instapaper and ReadItLater to collect your links. For Image Hosts you can chose between Twitpic and yFrog. Also the url shortener can be chosen, you can use Trim.ly, U.nu, Kl.am, Is.gd and Idek.net. Why bit.ly isn´t there (best would be with account settings) is a mystery, i just hope it will be there in a future version.

The last two options are not really options. There is Manual which shows you how to use Tweets, and there is Support request where you can directly contact the Tweets team.

The timeline navigation is rather simple. By touching someones avatar you get where you decided you want to in the settings, on long press you can follow / unfollow the user, check the profile or send him a DM. Links are opnened in an internal browser. If you click on a Twitpic link, the Twitpic page gets loaded instead of downloading the image, like other clients do. If you long press a tweet with reply you see the original tweet. That´s quite nice but it would be better to see the whole conversation (if there are more replies). Short press on a tweet shows the options Email, Favorite, Translate, Retweet and Reply. That´s well done as everything happens directly in the timeline.

When composing a tweet you have the options Shrink tweet, Add Photo, Shrink urls, @dd user. Shrink Tweet shortens the input text by deleting letters (ths instead of this for example). Strange option, but it is there. The others are self describing.

Before the video, here my final statement: Tweets is a well thought twitter client with smaller points which aren´t perfect but could be in no time if the developper wants to. The handling and the menu transitions are great, great enough to stand in one line with the “big” ones. I will use Tweets a few more days and then, as it looks now, ban echofon from my iPhoone. The price of $ 2.99 is worth what you get. Definitely Tweets is not just another twitter client but a real alternative to Tweetie and Co.

As mentioned, the feature list is huge. But that alone doesn´t automatically make a good app. The app must work the way we want it to. That´s what Nightstand Weather Clock does and it does it very well. The menu and options are well structured, the look and behaviour is what you expect from being a menu on the iPhone. Nothing you can do wrong there but a lot you can customize easily. Never wake up again by a alarm tone that causes a heart attack instead of pleasing your ears in that most sad moment of the day. Wake up happily with the tune of your liking and check the weather directly from bed.

No matter if used on the desk in your office or at the side of your bed, Nightstand Weather Clock makes your phone an eye-catcher. To create your custom IPSW, download it through iTunes and run Sn0wbreeze. You have two options, simple mode and expert mode. Simple mode will do all the neccessary steps, hacktivation and pushfix included. Expert mode gives a few more options, like the selection of blacksn0w to unlock your iPhone. But you can always install blacksn0w through cydia, if you need the unlock. So i recommend simple mode, especially if you have an older 3GS, because some people reported problems when using expert mode together with an iPhone 3GS.

After having built your custom IPSW, just restore it through iTunes and you are done. Enjoy your jailbroken iPhone! Sn0wbreeze only works on Windows machines, Xp, Vista and Windows 7 are supported (32 and 64 bit).

Es wird sich zeigen, ob die Schließung von Install0us Auswirkungen auf die Nutzung gecrackter Apps haben wird, ich persönlich denke schon. Vielleicht sehen die Entwickler aber dann auch mal, dass eben nicht jede gecrackte App, die heruntergeladen wurde, dann auch gekauft wird, nur weil sie nicht gecrackt verfügbar ist. Der in der letzten Woche oftmals erwähnte Schaden von $ 450 Mio durch die Verbreitung und Nutzung von gecrackten Apps auf dem iPhone ist sicher nicht sehr realistisch. Ich denke, selbst wenn es 10% davon sind, ist es schon viel. Viele laden gecrackte Apps nur, weil sie eben verfügbar sind, würden sie aber niemals laden, wenn sie nur legal verfügbar wären. Somit relativiert sich der Schaden. Auch wird interessant zu beobachten sein, wie sich andere Projekte wie AppCake oder AppTrackr (bewusst keine Links gesetzt ) nun entwickeln.

Ich kann nur wiederholen, was ich schon öfter geschrieben habe: Es war nie zuvor so günstig, an mobile Software zu kommen, wie mit Einführung des AppStores. Wenn Euch eine App gefällt, kauft sie. Entwickler stecken da jede Menge Arbeit und Kohle rein. Ihr geht doch auch nur für Geld arbeiten, oder?

Am 29. Juni 2007 kam das erste iPhone in den USA auf den Markt. Die Leute standen Schlange, um ein Handy zu bekommen, das durchaus nicht mit damals aktuellen Geräten vergleichbar war – und das ist nicht positiv gemeint. Es konnte keine MMS verschicken, hatte trotz der Haupteigenschaft Internet kein UMTS Modul, die 2MP Kamera kam ohne Fotolicht und glänzte auch sonst nicht mit ihrer Bildqualität, Multitasking gab es auch nicht und von einem AppStore war noch keine Rede. Dafür gab es teure Verträge, ein teures Gerät und die Gewissheit, das Handy nur in einem bestimmten Netz benutzen zu können. Dennoch verkaufte sich schon das “original” iPhone wie warme Semmeln. Eine nicht zu unterschätzende Mitschuld daran trägt sicher die Marketingabteilung von Apple, die gekonnt selbstverständliche Features als neu und bahnbrechend darstellen kann. Gemischt mit einer spektakulären Keynote von Steve Jobs und einer recht aktiven Apple Fangemeinde, MUSSTE sich das Gerät verkaufen. Promis wurden mit iPhones versorgt und präsentierten diese bereitwillig in der Öffentlichkeit. Man konnte also mit einem Handyvertrag und Zahlung eines nicht gerade geringen Betrages in diese Glitzerwelt einsteigen.

Schnell wurden dann aber auch Stimmen laut, dass das iPhone gar nicht so toll ist, wie immer behauptet wird. Apple legte ein Jahr später nach, mit dem iPhone 3G. Immer noch kein Multitasking, dafür aber GPS und UMTS Modul an Bord. Das sollte reichen, um die bösen Kritiker verstummen zu lassen. Außerdem wurde das Herzstück des iPhones, das Betriebssystem aufgebohrt, so dass MMS (nutzt die überhaupt jemand?) möglich waren. Als dann im Juli 2008 der AppStore an den Start ging, ging ein Ruck durch die Handywelt. Bereits zum Start gab es 500 Programme, teils kostenlos, teils zu, für Handysoftware ungewohnten, niedrigen Preisen. Plötzlich konnte das iPhone, das Überphone soviel mehr als andere Handys. Sicher? Nein. Nokia hat mit seinem Symbian Betriebssystem seit Jahren ein System, auf dem sich hochwertige Software installieren lässt. Das Problem daran, Symbian ist zu kompliziert, sowohl für die Programmierer, als auch für den Anwender. Die Geräte sind auf Grund des Betriebssystems zu langsam, reagieren nicht so geschmeidig wie ein iPhone, lassen sich auch nicht so intuitiv bedienen. Was ist mit Windows Mobile? Ebenfalls ein Betriebssystem, welches sich mit Zusatzprogrammen aufhübschen lässt und zusätzliche Features bringt. Aber auch hier gilt, zu kompliziert, zu unmodern.

Es dauerte nicht lange, da waren die ersten Softwarekracher für das iPhone und den iPod Touch verfügbar und das Handy wurde mehr und mehr zum Unterhaltungsterminal. Internet, MP3 Player und Spielekonsole in einem. Da verschmerzt man auch die schlechte Kamera, da man ja sowieso seine Digicam dabei hat, wenn man mal was fotografieren möchte. Der AppStore mit seinen 100.000 verfügbaren Programmen ist auch noch heute das Zugpferd für das iPhone. Der Begriff Apps wurde populär und nun will jeder ein Stück vom großen Softwarekuchen abhaben. Selbst RIM, wohl nach wie vor der Marktführer im Bereich Businesshandys (Einschätzung von mir, kann genausogut sein, dass sie kurz vorm Bankrott stehen), bewirbt seine Handys plöltzlich mit hochauflösenden Spielen anstatt mit seinem genialen Email Service. Google versucht mit dem Android Market sein Glück, Nokia hat den OviStore ins Leben gerufen. Allerdings hat dabei wohl kaum jemand bedacht, dass die Kundschaft auch bereit sein muss, für Content zu zahlen. Apple Nutzer sind dies gewohnt, ist man doch seit Jahren an iTunes gebunden. Ein weiterer, nicht zu unterschätzender Faktor ist auch die Einfachheit einer Zusatzinstallation. Hier mal ein kurzer Vergleich:

iPhone: AppStore aufrufen, Programm auswählen, iTunes Kennwort eingeben, fertig.
Nokia: OviStore aufrufen, Programm auswählen, Login eingeben, irgendiwe die Bezahlung regeln, runterladen, installieren, OviStore wieder schliessen, fertig.

Es ist nach wie vor so, dass gerade bei Nokia, es einfacher ist, sich irgendwo eine gecrackte Version eines Programms runterzuladen, als diese legal zu erwerben. Und das sollte normalerweise nicht der Fall sein dürfen. Programm googlen, runterladen, installieren, nutzen. So dürfte der typische Nokia Nutzer vorgehen. Warum sollte er es auch komplizierter machen und dafür auch noch zahlen? Apps sind nicht zwangsläufig ein Garant für Verkäufe, insbesondere wenn diese nicht entsprechend präsentiert werden.

Aber zurück zum eigentlichen Thema. Die Art und Weise, wie Apple das iPhone darstellt, die Eigenschaften hervorhebt und die Einfachheit der Bedienung sind meiner Meinung nach das, womit sich die anderen messen müssen. Google ist mit Android auf dem besten Weg, da ranzukommen und die Vorstellung des Nexus One heute (05.01.2010) wird ihren Teil dazu beitragen. Nokia hat schwer zu kämpfen und versucht nun mit Maemo ein neues System im High-End Bereich zu platzieren, ob dies gelingt ist fraglich, man kann es nur hoffen und Nokia viel Glück wünschen. Motorola setzt ebenfalls auf Android und ist gut darin beraten, dies auch beizubehalten, das Motorola Milestone ist auch als solchiges zu betrachten. Und hier kristallisiert sich nun auch heraus, warum alle Handys mit dem iPhone verglichen werden. Weil sie versuchen, dieses zu imitieren. Apple macht was vor, alle anderen rennen hinterher und versuchen das gleiche, anstatt auf Innovation zu setzen. Warum ist der Anteil der Touchscreenhandys auf dem Markt so drastisch gestiegen? Weil Apple es vorgemacht hat. Warum gibt es plötzlich für jedes Betriebssystem einen eigenen AppStore? Weil Apple es vorgemacht hat. Doch leider ist eine Kopie nie so gut wie das Original. Solange es keiner schafft, etwas neues, bahnbrechendes zu erschaffen (was zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht denkbar ist), werden die Vergleiche nicht aufhören. Apple hat mit dem iPhone ein Feature geschaffen, welches anscheinend sehr schwer nachzumachen ist: Die Einfachheit. Jeder kann ein iPhone bedienen, ohne jemals eines in der Hand gehabt zu haben. Jeder schafft es, Software aus dem AppStore zu kaufen, ohne jemals zuvor etwas “heruntergeladen” zu haben. Wie stellt man das iPhone lautlos? Richtig, ein Kippschalter an der Seite des Gerätes wird umgelegt. Wie stelle ich ein N97 lautlos (Symbian)? Richtig, entweder drücke ich den Auschschaltknopf kurz und wähle dann ein Profil aus, welches ich vorher hoffentlich so bearbeitet habe, dass es wirklich lautlos ist, oder ich geh ins Menü, suche den punkt Profile, wähle das passende und aktiviere es. Ganz schön kompliziert und zeitaufwendig für ein Feature, das zumindest ich mehrmals täglich nutze. Und so zieht sich das durch das ganze System.

Die iPhone Brille, von der im oben genannten Artikel gesprochen wird, sind nicht die technischen Merkmale des iPhones, es ist auch nicht ein oder mehrere Killerfeatures, die kein anderer hat. Es ist das Komplettpaket, welches dem Durchschnittsuser auf eine mitunter genial einfache Weise am technischen Fortschritt teilhaben lässt. Da macht es auch nichts, wenn das iPhone eben nicht auf aktuellem technischen Stand ist. Wozu auch?
